Why Nicaragua?

Nicaragua is a small, mostly Spanish speaking country in Central America. It is about the size of New York and the population is approximately 6 million people. Nicaragua is bordered by Honduras on the north and Costa Rica on the south, the Pacific Ocean on the west and the Caribbean Sea on the east.

Its nickname, “The Land of Lakes and Volcanoes,” evokes Nicaragua’s primary geographical features: two great lakes and a chain of impressive and active volcanoes. There are approximately 40 volcanoes in the country. One of the active volcanoes, Volcán Masaya, has a paved road that leads directly to the lip of the volcano. If you visit at the right time, you can actually see a visible pool of lava in the crater! We captured the image of the crater below on one of our trips to the volcano. 

Lake Nicaragua, seen in the distance of the picture below, is the largest lake in Central America. This view is one of our favorites in the country! 

While the country has much to boast about, it is also the second poorest country in the western hemisphere and many families struggle to support their families. If you take the chance to read our story, you’ll see that, through various trips and living in the country, we have developed wonderful relationships with people in Nicaragua. Due to the civil unrest that continues to afflict the country, we had to get creative in thinking of ways to continue to support our friends, hence Thrive Nica was founded.
